3 Who Died In Fire, Had Relatives Here.

The uncle, aunt, and nephew of Mrs. Marvin Hagen, Mrs. Lisle Baltes and Mrs. L. Stapf of Farmington, died in a house fire, Monday night at the couple’s home at 218 E. Morton Street in Saint Paul. Dead are Hans J. Hansen, 81, Ida Hansen, 85, and Dennis Koehler, 17.

Saint Paul fire officials were checking on Tuesday on the possibility of Mr. Hansen smoking being the cause of the fire. According to relatives, it is believed he was sitting in his easy chair in the living room smoking, when the chair caught on fire.

He tried to extinguish the blaze by obtaining a garden hose from the basement, but that apparently had a kink in it. He then went to the kitchen sink for water, but is believed to become exhausted and collapsed, due to the smoke building in the house. He was found in the kitchen on the floor dressed in nightclothes and both Mrs. Hansen and Koehler were found in separate bedrooms.

District Fire Chief Robert J. Heinen said that a neighbor turned in the blaze which apparently had been going “for some time”. The fire was contained in the living room and the dining room.
