Plot D: Augusta Thana / Auguste Thöne (1820 – ca. 1896-1904)

On the 31st of December 1885, Auguste, the widow of Michael Thöne, was received as a member of the Zion Evangelical Church on Winifred Street. At that time, she resided on Annapolis Street. By 1893, Auguste was boarding at the southeast corner of Simon Avenue and Annapolis Streets. By 1895, she resided at the same location, although Simon Avenue had been renamed to Stickney Avenue.

The US Census, recorded on June 20, 1895, enumerates the household thusly: Pieper, August-65-Ger, Julia-45-Ger; Frundt, Mary-20-IA, Henry-16-IA, Samuel-11-MN; Tanna, August-75-Ger. Where “Tanna” is an English phonetic representation of the German spelling of “Thöne.” Julia is August Pieper’s second wife and the Frundt children are from Julia’s first marriage.

The 1896 St. Paul City Directory reveals that Augusta is boarding at the August Pieper residence at South Park, the north-most region of South St. Paul. The location of this residence, at that time, was described as: “the eastside of Stickney Avenue, two (houses) north of Bircher Avenue.”
