  2. Lot 31 was originally owned by Matthias (Mathew) Engel. Upon her death in 1889, Mathew’s first wife, Bertha (Meyer) Engel was interred on lot 31. She and her monument remain on lot 31. Mathew married Barbara Leidig in 1892 and they had four children. Mathew died in 1901. He along with an infant son and a fourteen-year old daughter were also buried on lot 31. Barbara Engel married Christian Schmid in 1905. In 1916, after the death of their six-year old daughter, Christian and Barbara established a Schmid/Engel lot at Riverview Cemetery. They had Christian’s first wife, Margarethe (Wilmsen) Schmid, along with Mathew Engel and the two Engel children moved to Riverview. Lot 31 was later transferred to Jacob Brotzler.

  3. Jacob Brotzler’s last name was actually Rotzler when he immigrated to the USA on April 14, 1889. He added the “B” to his last name before marrying Margarethe Leidig. Margarethe and Barbara Leidig were sisters. Two other sisters, Rosine (Leidig) Haberoth and Magdalene (Leidig) Ellinger are also buried in Old Salem Kirchhof in lots 66 and 38, respectively.

OBITUARIES

Plot A: Bertha (Meyer/Maier) Engel, 1844-1889 (1/26/1844 - 11/25/1889)

Engel—Bertha, born Meyer, rather suddenly came to lose her life through a tragic accident, at Saint Paul, Minnesota. As she, namely, was driving home from church on Sunday the 24th of November 1889 and was sitting with a female neighbor in the back seat of a buggy, the horse reared-up, the seat, because it was not fastened, gave way and those inside were thrown down backwards with full force onto the frozen earth. Sister Engel fell on the head and broke her upper spine. She was brought to the hospital and died the next morning. She was born on the 26th of January 1844 at Regensdorf, Zürich Canton, Switzerland, became a convert to God 13 years ago and affiliated herself to our church. She led a quiet, pious life and also shortly before she died, explained that she was ready for death. She leaves behind a deeply mournful husband, 4 sisters and 2 brothers, who feel pain in her sudden departure. Georg Husser, Preacher
