LEIDIG-ENGEL-SCHMID – Barbara died June 8, 1938.  Her funeral was held on the 11th.  Barbara Leidig Schmid, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Leidig, was born in Germany, November 18th, 1866.  Here she grew to womanhood and was confirmed in the church on April 18th, 1880.  In the spring of 1890 she came to America.  On November 17th, 1892 she married Matthew Engel and to this union was born 4 children, 3 preceding their mother in death.  After 8 and a-half years of happy wedded life, she lost her husband in death on May 2nd, 1901.  On May 25th, 1905 she married Christian Schmid.  To this union were born 3 children, one preceding her mother to the great beyond.  On March 31st, 1924 she was again left a widow by the death of her husband.  Thus, her life has been one of disappointment and sorrow.  Added to this grief was the burden of illness both of herself and her family.  She has not been in good health for many years being afflicted with high blood pressure and diabetes.  She was only out of the house once the past winter.  She has had several fainting spells and a slight stroke in February in which she fell and broke several ribs.  Then came the added pain with pleurisy on the other side.  But in spite of all this illness, she was so patient and never complained.  We read that the Lord was made patient through suffering, so He had given her grace and strength to bear her sorrow and her suffering.  She seemed to be somewhat stronger the first part of this week but death came suddenly Wednesday just before noon (June 3, 1938), and with only a few minutes of semi-consciousness, the Lord took her home.  What a day of rejoicing it must have been in glory for she has a larger family over there than here.  And what comfort comes to those that remain to know that there shall be a Reunion of all round the great white throne.  She leaves to mourn her loss, one sister Mrs. Margaret Brotzler; 3 children, Mrs. Barbara Bahner; Mrs. Edna Sorensen, and Edwin Schmid, all of whom lived near and were all present at her departure.  There remain 4 grandchildren and a great many other relatives, and friends without number.  She was converted and joined our church in January 1892, and has been a faithful member those 46 years.  She was a member of both the Ladies Aid and the W.M.S.  Surely the Lord will reward her for her faithfulness.  She read her Bible and church papers faithfully and often quoted the verse, which we have chosen for our text, “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”  This verse has been her comfort and is one that we may well meditate upon, on this sad but hopeful occasion.
